Pole Drag

If you have them, use them...

Very basic method of moving a new skier across flat terrain or mild slopes. It gets them used to sliding on skis while not under their own power (think gravity simulation) and requires them to have a good posture.

Key points:

  • ensure boots are correcly in bindings,

  • "non-pointy" end offered to the skier,

  • skis pointed straight forward,

  • stand tall, try not to get pulled-over,

  • skier stays to the side you are pulling from,

  • inform them where you are taking them,

  • have a key word or phrase to exit-the-ride.

"Other" Devices

Hoola-hoop, cross bar with trailing arms or backpack / leash system.

Another very effective method of moving a new skier across flat terrain or used as a speed contol device while on slopes. It gets them used to sliding on their skis. The leash system does not always promote good ski posture, Hoolas tend to get bent with use and trailing arms can be dificult on lifts. Take your pick, all are less stressing on ones back than skiing in tandem with a share pole.

Key points:

  • get user & guide familiar with it usage on flat terrain,

  • try using in both push and pull modes (if applcable),

  • "both" skis pointed straight forward,

  • skier stands tall, tries not to get pushed/pulled over,

  • allow skier to try turning as they are moved,

  • get skier to try stopping using snowplow stance,

  • guide should:

    • familiarize riding lift with device only (no skier),

    • have stategy to avoid a fallen skier.
